WHAT IS THE LIGHT ADJUSTABLE LENS?
With cataract surgery, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is placed into the eye. The exact type of lens is determined by what best adheres to your prescription, and the majority of lenses are permanent and may not be able to be altered later on. As an alternate lens option, our skilled eye care team at Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons offers Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), which allows for more customizable vision results. Recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Light Adjustable Lens is curated with special photosensitive material for more accurate, clear eyesight. Following the placement of the Light Adjustable Lens, your lens will be able to be adjusted for your optimal vision specifications during a few in-office sessions at our Greenbelt and Bowie, MD facilities. HOW DOES THE LIGHT ADJUSTABLE LENS WORK?
Similar to standard IOLs, the Light Adjustable Lens is placed into your eye during cataract surgery. However, unlike other IOLs, the Light Adjustable Lens is created from a special photosensitive silicone that allows it to be adjusted in response to light. Following the healing of your eyes after your surgery, you will return to Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons to receive a series of routine UV light treatments to customize your vision. A light-based delivery device will be utilized in order to direct a low-intensity UV light beam onto your eye to adjust the shape of your lens, taking about 90 seconds per eye to complete. With a Light Adjustable Lens, patients will have the ability to customize the clarity of their new eyesight until it meets their ideal vision.
What to Expect with the Light Adjustable Lens
Following the implantation of your Light Adjustable Lens during cataract surgery, your eyes will be very sensitive to light. At Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons, our eye care team will give you special UV protective glasses to wear at all times. You will need to wear them after your procedure until about 24 hours after the completion of your last light session at our Greenbelt and Bowie, MD facilities. Once the light sessions are complete, no more adjustments can be made to the Light Adjustable Lens following the 24 hour period. Typically, the majority of patients require 2 – 4 ultraviolet light sessions over the period of 1 – 2 weeks in order to achieve their ideal vision. After the completion of your sessions, you can experience clearer vision for an improved lifestyle.
